Harwich places in top of field after First Day at MIT States

CAMBRIDGE - The Harwich High School Sailing Team ranks fifth out of 22 schools after day one of the Massachusetts High School Championships yesterday at MIT in a shifty northwesterly wind.
Falmouth and Barnstable stand seventh and 11th, respectively.
The event is a two day contest flooded with private schools, each with long sailing history.
Harwich's program is in its second year.
But Harwich's team with 59 points, scored just behind St. John's Prep (54) and Saint Sebastian's (47), Notere Dame (43) and first place finisher Manchester (26).
Falmouth notched 63 points; Barnstable, 80.
Doing the work for Harwich were Mike O'Loughlin (skipper) and Alexandra Johnson with 21 points, and Peter Donovan (skipper) and Josh Mongeau with 38 points.
O'Loughlin also earned a first place finish in one of the series races.
Today Harwich hopes to slip into a trophy winning fourth position with the total freshmen combo
of Jamie Scarbrough (skipper) and Bryan Knowles, and Tommy Leach (skipper) and Scott Penfield.
Harwich is fifth in the State 1st on the Cape at Sail Championships

CAMBRIDGE - Harwich maintained its fifth place standing yesterday as the MIAA Sailing Championships concluded on the Charles River.
Twenty-two teams competed at the event hosted by MIT. Falmouth and Barnstable gave the Cape three schools in the top 10.
Harwich finished tied with Wellesley with 93 points but by virtue of finishing ahead of Wellesley more often in the 12 races was awarded fifth.
Freshmen Jamie Scarbrough and Tom Leach skippered Harwich's two boats yesterday with Bryan Knowles and Scott Penfield crewing.
Falmouth was seventh with 95 points and Barnstable was eighth at 103.
Manchester was crowned champion with 46 points, besting Notre Dame of Hingham (57 points).
