Presumably he may have kept a journal other years, however , this is the only one yet found. As he mentions names of friends and people who visited the farm for goods and services, and his visits to the Hollow, New Hartford or up the "mountain", we are given a snap shot in time of life on Center Hill, Barkhamsted and the ties each family had within this hardy New England community. It is mere coincidence that the journal was written at the same time that the F.W.Beers Co. of New York published a map of Barkhamsted, CT which identified each residence by owner name and adds to the interest of examining this effort by Albert Slade. Albert died at age 79.
This manuscript has been copied with faithful effort to reproduce it, preserving as far as possible the original spelling, punctuation, etc. The copy has been verified with the original, and necessary corrections made. Where there is grave doubt as to a word or name, this is indicated by a question mark.
